Rebirth of an orchestra as civic beacon

Sinfonia de São Paulo

Over the past three years the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo - OSESP) has become a world-class ensemble in one of the most surprising recoveries in the recent annals of classical music. The changes were sudden and dramatic. Precarious rehearsal and performance conditions, improvised in rundown movie houses, schools and auditoriums, were exchanged for the splendor of the new Sala São Paulo, a remodeled railroad station with luxurious marble decor and excellent acoustics, located in the city’s deteriorated central district. The musicians’ pay was tripled, giving them secure and demanding full-time jobs.
